Music

About

Sound Design

MaIs

Audiovisual performance, first held in Milan in 2013. Corn grains are cooked in a pot surrounded by a glass cylinder, popping and bouncing on its transparent walls. The sound of the impacts is captured by a contact microphone, and processed in real time to create evolving, surprising, psychedelic sound textures.

Musica sull'Acqua

Acoustic installation presented at Avventura nella Scienza, Milan, 2012. Fish in the tropical tank of the Civic Aquarium is tracked in real time by multiple cameras. Information on its motion is extracted through computer vision algorithms and mapped to the control parameters of a software synthesiser.

Music From a Class

Collective performance held in Perugia for the Document Freedom Day 2010. Students of a local high school recorded sounds coming from their classroom, collectively arranged them into a soundscape composition using free and open source software, and finally exported the result into open audio encoding formats.

Moon Landing

Interactive multimedia installation presented at Festival della Creatività, Florence, 2009. Through a head-mounted display, multiple real-time camera streams and the chroma key technique, users experience their own landing on the moon as if they had a third eye, looking at themselves from the outside.

Software

Sound Design Toolkit

Collection of physically-informed models for the synthesis of everyday sounds and signal analysis algorithms designed for their vocal control. Intended as a framework for research and education in Sonic Interaction Design, developed as part of the EU project SkAT-VG (Sketching Audio Technologies using Vocalisation and Gesture).

Sonic Tennis

Audio-based game for mobile devices, simulating a tennis match between two players over the Internet. As no relevant feedback is given through the display, the device can be freely used as a motion-based controller and the game can be equally enjoyed by both visually-impaired and sighted users.

IPCapture

Open source library for the acquisition of MJPEG streams in the Processing development environment. The library allows to visualize footage from IP video surveillance cameras or other network sources in Processing sketches, both on desktop environments and mobile devices running on Android.

GlobeMX

HTML5 player for interactive multimedia products based on the IEEE 1599 document format. Heterogeneous media streams referring to the same musical piece are glued together by a common description layer based on XML, and can be therefore navigated, switched and/or played simultaneously without losing synchronisation.
